Celebrating the Legacy of Archbishop Luke Mataruka Pferedzayi
The Council for Churches in Africa (CCA), a continental body of indigenous churches, has posthumously honoured the founder of the St Luke’s Apostolic Ejiwel Jekenishen Church, Archbishop Luke Mataruka Pferedzayi, for his outstanding contribution to peace, independence, and Pan-African unity across Southern Africa.
The honorary lifetime achievement award was presented during a special handover ceremony that coincided with the church’s Passover feast. Speaking at the event, CCA’s founding leader, Archbishop Dr Rocky Moyo, described the late Pferedzayi as a selfless servant of God who played a vital role in shaping a just and independent Africa.
A Patriotic Life Dedicated to Justice and Unity
“This is the highest level of recognition and appreciation we give to church founders whose sacrifices led to the spiritual and social liberation of indigenous communities,” said Archbishop Moyo. “The late Luke Mataruka Pferedzayi provided food, counselling, refuge, and spiritual guidance during colonial struggles. He was a beacon of hope and patriotism, whose legacy is embedded in the very fabric of our continent’s progress.”
Moyo further explained how Pferedzayi stood side-by-side with fellow indigenous church leaders, supporting freedom fighters and advocating for a society founded on justice, peace, and equality—even under the most difficult circumstances.
Legacy Received and Carried Forward
Receiving the award on behalf of the late founder, current leader Archbishop Dr Saint Phillip Pferedzayi expressed heartfelt gratitude. He called on all indigenous churches to emulate this legacy through continued preaching of peace, unity, and national development.
“Let us celebrate the efforts of our founder whose leadership was deeply rooted in the spirit of Ubuntu,” said Archbishop Pferedzayi. “His ethical and moral leadership created a foundation for future generations to inherit a society built on respect, shared values, and spiritual growth.”
He added, “As churches, we must partner with our governments to instil a strong sense of patriotism and responsibility in our communities. Let peace and love be the core of our message.”
A Growing Movement Across Southern Africa
Today, St Luke’s Apostolic Ejiwel Jekenishen Church has grown to nearly four million members across Southern Africa, with representation in Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and beyond. The recognition of its founder stands not only as a celebration of one man’s life but also as a testament to the role indigenous churches continue to play in uniting and uplifting African nations.
